Summertime!

It’s high summer and I went out to the woods twice this last week. I missed it. I haven’t been out as often because Steve (the cat) is old (16) and doesn’t like to go into the woods anymore. We still go for short walks in the grass and sometimes up the little hill to the edge of the trees, but no further. It was making me really sad until I acknowledged that it’s just the stage we are in. At first being out there alone was both a little creepy, and lonely. But now that I’ve realized I can go out by myself while she is napping I feel better. We both get to do what we want and neither is missing out.

I also realized that when she was with me (leashless) I was never able to stay in one spot and draw. She is a slow, inquisitive walker, but drawing takes so much focus. One time while I was taking photos of various mushrooms, she wandered off by herself and I didn’t notice. It took half an hour of panicked searching to find her playing on some fallen trunks, completely enjoying herself. Yes, I am still talking about my cat.

Mushrooms!

So now I want to practice drawing outside and letting myself become absorbed in the gorgeous environment and activity. It feels exactly as meditative and healing as it is supposed to be.

Steven.
