Having Fun

Fountain pen ink and watercolor sketch.

I have been working in this small sketchbook for the last couple weeks. I hoarded it for awhile and the sizing went bad, at least for the outer pages, so it becomes easier to experiment and play. I’m using some mixed media and going through photos I took with my phone.

Fountain pen ink, watercolor, and iridescent ink.

I’ve even used some gouache in it, which the more I use the more it makes sense to me. This is obvious, and true about most things, but is so difficult when you are experiencing it. I am so hard on myself. But that’s what makes me want to improve, right?

I have also been thinking, I want make something big! Bigger than a tiny sketchbook! So maybe one of these can be a thumbnail for something larger. But the desire to create something on a certain size piece of paper doesn’t seem like a good motivator to me. What else would be different? Or is that exactly the question I want to experiment on? Sometimes I think I think too much.

It’s very much like writing this blog; so difficult but it would get easier if I practice!

Colored pencil sketch, then watercolor and a bit of gouache for the spots.

A totally different sketchbook with good paper, but the idea was the same. This was started with a fountain pen drawing, added some handmade watercolor paint I didn’t like and was going to get rid of, and finished with gouache. Maybe I will keep those paints for now…
